Meesapulimala and Kolukkumalai sit on the same high ridge east of Munnar, on either side of the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border. One is a guided summit trek through grassland. The other is a jeep ride to a tea estate famous for its sunrise. Together they make one of the best three day mountain trips in South India.
This plan assumes you reach Munnar on the evening before Day 1. If you are coming from further away, see our plans from Kochi and from Bengaluru.
Day 1: Kolukkumalai sunrise and the tea factory
Kolukkumalai is reached from Suryanelli, roughly an hour’s drive from Munnar town. From Suryanelli, only 4×4 jeeps go up the broken estate road to the top. To see sunrise, you leave Munnar around 3:30 to 4 AM and switch to a jeep at Suryanelli.
- Sunrise: on a good morning, the sun comes up over a sea of cloud with the Tamil Nadu plains below.
- Tea factory: the old factory at Kolukkumalai still processes tea the traditional way. Short tours run through the morning, and you can buy tea at the shop.
- Afternoon: back in Munnar by lunch. Rest. Tomorrow starts early.
Use authorised jeep operators at Suryanelli and agree the price before you get in. During long weekends and April holidays, jeeps get booked out, so arrange one a day ahead.
Day 2: Meesapulimala trek
Meesapulimala is a KFDC-managed trek, so you need a booked slot and a forest guide. You have two ways to do it.
Option A: day trek
Leave Munnar before dawn by jeep, reach base camp, walk through Rhodo Valley and over the grassy hills to the 2,640 m summit, and come back down by afternoon. It is a long day. Read what the day trek looks like before you choose it.
Option B: trek and camp
Reach base camp on Day 1 afternoon instead of resting in Munnar, spend the night in a tent, and summit on Day 2 morning with fresh legs. This shifts Kolukkumalai to Day 3 morning, which also works. Most first-timers enjoy this version more.
Day 3: Munnar at an easy pace
Your legs will feel the trek. Keep the last day light: Mattupetty Dam, the tea museum, a slow breakfast, a few viewpoints on the way out. See our list of places to visit near Meesapulimala for ideas, then head home after lunch.
The plan at a glance
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Night |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kolukkumalai sunrise, tea factory | Rest in Munnar | Munnar |
| 2 | Meesapulimala trek | Back to Munnar | Munnar |
| 3 | Munnar sightseeing | Depart | Home |
Where to stay
- Munnar town: every budget, and the easiest base for both early starts.
- Suryanelli: homestays and tented camps closer to Kolukkumalai. Good for Day 1, longer drive for Meesapulimala.
- KFDC stays: base camp tents, Rhodo Mansion or Sky Cottage if you choose the overnight trek. See camping and stay options.
Tips that make this trip smoother
- Carry cash. Jeep drivers and small shops near Suryanelli rarely take cards.
- Pack warm layers for both mornings. Pre-dawn ridge tops are cold at any time of year.
- Do not schedule Kolukkumalai and Meesapulimala on the same day. Two pre-dawn jeep rides back to back is a lot.
- Fog closes in from late afternoon. Avoid driving ghat roads at night.
