The quick answer
September to February is the best window, and November is peak season, when the hills are still green and the skies clear. December and January give the coldest nights. September and October are the greenest. June to August is monsoon and best avoided.
| Months | Conditions | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| Dec to Feb | Clear skies, cold nights, dry trails | Best views. Book weekends early. |
| Sep to Nov | Green hills, streams flowing, some afternoon showers | November is peak season. Book weekends early. |
| Mar to May | Warmer days, haze, summer showers | Possible. Expect softer views. |
| Jun to Aug | Heavy rain, strong wind, leeches | Avoid. Treks may be suspended. |
Winter: December to February
The air is dry and visibility is at its best, so this is when you are most likely to see across to Anamudi and down to the Tamil Nadu plains. Nights at base camp get properly cold, and early mornings around Munnar can approach freezing. Christmas, New Year and long weekends fill quickly.
After the monsoon: September to November
The hills turn a deep green and the streams run full. Early September can still bring rain and leeches. October and November often see the northeast monsoon arrive as afternoon showers, so the morning is your window. Waterproofs are a must.
November is peak season on Meesapulimala: the hills are still green, the rain has mostly cleared and the views open up. Weekend slots and base camp tents go first, so enquire two to three weeks ahead.
Summer: March to May
Days are warm on the open grass and haze softens the long views. Start as early as possible and carry extra water. Dry months are also forest fire season in Kerala, and forest authorities sometimes restrict treks during this period. Pre-monsoon showers return by May.
Monsoon: June to August
Heavy rain, gusting wind and thick cloud mean slippery slopes and little to see from the top. Leeches are everywhere in the wet grass. KFDC may suspend treks during bad weather, and we generally advise picking another season.
Weather on the summit
Expect the top to feel several degrees colder than Munnar town, with wind that cuts through a single layer. Even on a sunny winter day, carry a windproof jacket and a warm layer in your daypack.
Picking the right day
- Weekdays are quieter at camp and easier to book.
- Long weekends sell out first. Enquire two to three weeks ahead.
- Overnight plans give you a better shot at a clear morning on the summit.
