A Meesapulimala day trek packs a pre-dawn jeep ride, a summit at 2,640 m and the drive back into one long day. It is the fastest way to stand on top of the second-highest peak in the Western Ghats, and it rewards people who know what they are signing up for.
A typical timeline
Timings shift with the season, the jeep track and your group’s pace, but most day treks follow a pattern like this:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 4:00 to 4:30 AM | Pickup in Munnar by 4×4 jeep |
| 5:30 AM | Reach KFDC base camp, check in |
| 6:00 AM | Jeep or walk towards Rhodo Valley, trek starts with the forest guide |
| 8:30 to 10:00 AM | Summit, depending on start point and pace |
| Late morning | Descent to base camp, food |
| Afternoon | Jeep back to Munnar |
Some groups are driven past base camp to start walking near Rhodo Valley, which shortens the day. Others walk the whole way from base camp. Ask your organiser which one you are booking.
How hard is it in one day?
Harder than the overnight version, mainly because of the early start and the lack of rest before the climb. The trail itself is grassy and non-technical, but it rolls over several hills and the last climb is steep. Expect 6 to 8 hours on your feet if you start from base camp.
A day trek suits you if you already walk or run regularly, sleep early without trouble and are comfortable going fast on the way down. Our 4 week fitness plan gets most active people there. If that does not sound like you, the trek and camp option is kinder.
What is usually included
- KFDC entry and forest guide
- Jeep between Munnar and base camp, often charged per vehicle for up to six people
- Light food or breakfast, depending on the operator
Check whether the jeep is part of the price. Day trek listings often quote a per person trek fee and add the jeep separately, which changes the real cost a lot for a group of two.
How to prepare the night before
- Sleep in Munnar, as close to the pickup point as you can.
- Lay out layers: a warm top for the jeep, a light layer for walking, a windproof for the summit.
- Pack 2 to 3 litres of water and snacks you actually like eating.
- Eat a proper dinner and go to bed by 9 PM.
- Charge your phone and power bank. There is little power and no network up there.
