Bengaluru to Meesapulimala is a classic long weekend escape: one overnight journey, one big summit, one more overnight back. Munnar is roughly 470 km from Bengaluru by road, so it takes a little planning to make it work without burning out.
Getting to Munnar
- Overnight bus: Kerala and Karnataka state buses and private operators run overnight services. Expect around 11 to 13 hours.
- Drive: the most common route goes via Salem and Coimbatore or Palakkad, then up into the hills. It is a long day at the wheel; split it if you can.
- Fly to Kochi: then about 108 km by road to Munnar, roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
The 3 day plan
| When | Plan |
|---|---|
| Thursday night | Overnight bus from Bengaluru |
| Friday | Reach Munnar in the morning, rest, easy walk around town, early night |
| Saturday | Meesapulimala trek, or jeep to base camp for the overnight version |
| Sunday | Morning sightseeing or Kolukkumalai sunrise, overnight bus back |
Do not plan to get off an overnight bus and start the trek the same morning. You will be tired, and most starts are before dawn anyway. Give yourself one night in Munnar first.
Budget at a glance
- Bus both ways: varies widely by operator and season
- Munnar stay: from budget lodges to resorts
- Trek: our 2 day trek and camp package is ₹3,999 to ₹5,000 per person, including jeep, KFDC entry, guide, meals and tent
Tips for Bengaluru trekkers
- Book the bus and the trek together. Slots, not buses, are the bottleneck.
- Carry warm layers. Munnar mornings are colder than Bengaluru winters.
- Keep some cash for jeeps and small shops.
