You do not need to be an athlete to summit Meesapulimala, but a few weeks of preparation turns a painful day into a great one. This plan assumes you are healthy, can walk 30 minutes comfortably today and have about four weeks. If you have a heart, lung or joint condition, check with your doctor first.
What the trek demands
- 6 to 8 hours on your feet
- Repeated climbs and descents on grass
- A steep final section near the summit
- Carrying a light daypack the whole way
So the plan builds three things: walking endurance, climbing legs and knees that can handle descents. For what each section of the trail feels like, see the full route and difficulty guide.
The 4 week plan
| Week | Weekdays (3 to 4 sessions) | Weekend |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 30 to 40 min brisk walk | 5 km walk, any terrain |
| 2 | 40 min brisk walk, plus 10 min of stairs twice a week | 7 km walk with a light backpack |
| 3 | 45 min walk, plus 15 to 20 min of stairs twice a week | 8 to 10 km walk with hills if you can find them |
| 4 | Keep sessions easy and shorter | Rest well in the last 2 to 3 days before the trek |
Strength in 15 minutes
Twice a week, after a walk, do two or three rounds of:
- Squats or sit-to-stand from a chair, 12 to 15
- Step-ups on a sturdy step, 10 per leg
- Calf raises, 20
- Plank, 20 to 40 seconds
Step-ups and slow stair descents are the most useful. They prepare your knees for the long way down.
Practise with your trek kit
Do at least two longer walks in the shoes and backpack you will use on the day, packed roughly as you will carry it. Our free packing checklist helps. It is the best way to find blisters and rubbing straps before they find you on the mountain.
The week of the trek
