Meesapulimala in the monsoon: should you go?

What Meesapulimala is like from June to August: rain, wind, leeches and closures, plus who should go and what to pack.

Monsoon Meesapulimala looks wonderful in photos: emerald hills, waterfalls everywhere, clouds pouring over the ridge. The reality on the trail is more complicated. Here is what to expect between June and August, and our honest advice.

What the monsoon brings

  • Heavy rain and strong wind on exposed grassy ridges.
  • Slippery slopes, especially on the descent.
  • Leeches in the wet grass and forest patches.
  • Thick cloud that often hides the summit view completely.
  • Possible suspensions: KFDC can stop or postpone treks when the weather turns.

So, should you go?

For most people, no. June and July especially are the hardest months: the trek is less safe, less comfortable and usually without views. Late August can improve, and early September often brings the green landscape with fewer storms.

If you are an experienced trekker who loves rain and accepts that the trip may be cancelled at short notice, a monsoon trek can be memorable. Go only with a forest guide, keep plans flexible and follow the guide’s call on turning back.

If you do go: monsoon kit

  • Proper rain jacket, not just a poncho
  • Leech socks
  • Shoes with deep grip
  • Two or three spare pairs of socks
  • Dry bags for phone and clothes
  • A full change of clothes left at camp or in the jeep

Better months to consider

September to February is the best window, with December and January giving the clearest views. See the month by month breakdown in our best time to visit guide.
