Meesapulimala guide

How to reach Meesapulimala

Munnar is the gateway. From there a 4x4 jeep covers the last rough stretch to the KFDC base camp. Here is every way to get there.

Where Meesapulimala is

Meesapulimala rises east of Munnar in Idukki district, close to the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border. The trek starts from a KFDC base camp roughly 24 km from Munnar town, and the last part of that drive runs on rough estate tracks that only a 4×4 handles well.

Getting to Munnar

By air

Cochin International Airport (COK) is the nearest airport. Taxis and buses take the Kothamangalam and Adimali road up the ghats. Plan on 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on traffic and mist.

By train

Aluva and Ernakulam are the closest major railway stations on the Kerala side. From Aluva, KSRTC buses and taxis run to Munnar through the day. Travellers from Tamil Nadu often come via Madurai and the Bodi ghat road.

By bus

KSRTC runs regular buses to Munnar from Kochi, Aluva and other Kerala towns. Overnight private and state buses connect Munnar with Bengaluru and Chennai, which suits a Friday night departure for a weekend trek.

By your own vehicle

From Kochi, drive via Kothamangalam, Neriamangalam and Adimali. From Tamil Nadu, the Bodinayakanur, Bodimettu and Poopara route climbs into Munnar from the east. Both are ghat roads with hairpins, so avoid driving them late at night when fog settles in.

Munnar to the base camp

The base camp is usually reached by jeep from Munnar, most often through the Mattupetty side and private tea estate roads. Another approach runs via Suryanelli on the Kolukkumalai side. Either way, the final stretch is unpaved, steep and rutted.

  • Regular cars and two-wheelers are not suitable for the last section. Leave your vehicle in Munnar.
  • Jeeps are arranged through KFDC or your trek organiser. They are usually charged per vehicle and shared by a small group.
  • Do not rely on map apps alone. Estate roads have unmarked forks and drivers who know the route save a lot of time.

Base camp to Rhodo Valley

From base camp, a jeep track continues about 4 km through pine and grassland to Rhodo Valley, the last point any vehicle reaches. Depending on the plan, groups walk this section or are driven up to save energy for the summit.

Where to stay the night before

Treks start early, so arrive in Munnar the evening before. Munnar town has stays for every budget. Picking one in town or toward the Mattupetty road keeps your morning pickup short. Driving up from Kochi on the same morning rarely works for the summit.

Travel tips

  • Carry cash. ATMs and fuel are in Munnar town, not near the base camp.
  • Mist rolls in on ghat roads from late afternoon. Aim to reach Munnar before dark.
  • If hairpins make you queasy, eat light and keep a window seat.
  • Share your plan with family before leaving Munnar. Network fades past the estates.
