Meesapulimala in December and January: cold nights, clear summits

Why winter is the best time for Meesapulimala views, how cold it gets, when to book and what extra to pack for December and January.

December and January are Meesapulimala’s best months for views. The air is dry, the sky is often clear and the long look across to Anamudi and down to the Tamil Nadu plains is at its sharpest. They are also the coldest and busiest months, so a little planning goes a long way.

What winter feels like

  • Clear mornings: your best chance of a cloud-free summit.
  • Cold nights: base camp gets properly cold, and early mornings around Munnar can approach freezing.
  • Dry grass: good grip, though dew still makes morning slopes slick.
  • Strong sun: UV is high at altitude even when the air is cold.

Book earlier than you think

Christmas week, New Year and every long weekend sell out first. Tent capacity at base camp is small, so enquire three to four weeks ahead for those dates. Weekdays in January are the sweet spot: clear and far quieter.

Winter packing additions

  • Warm down or fleece jacket
  • Thermal top and bottom for the night
  • Woollen cap that covers your ears
  • Gloves
  • Lip balm and sunscreen
  • Sunglasses

The full list is on our what to pack page, or build a tickable one with the free checklist tool.

New Year on the mountain

Ringing in the New Year at base camp, or catching the first sunrise of the year from Kolukkumalai, is a popular plan. It is also the hardest time to get slots and jeeps. If this is your plan, book first and arrange everything else around it. Our 3 day Meesapulimala and Kolukkumalai itinerary works well over the holidays.

Ready for the real thing?

We book the KFDC slot, the jeep and the guide for your date. You just turn up in Munnar.
