The route at a glance
| Section | Distance | What it is like |
|---|---|---|
| Munnar to base camp | About 24 km by jeep | Tea estate tracks, rough final stretch |
| Base camp to Rhodo Valley | About 4 km | Jeep track through pine and grassland, gentle climb |
| Rhodo Valley to summit | About 4 to 6 km one way | Rolling grassy hills with a steep final push |
| Summit to base camp | Same way back | Mostly downhill on grass, slippery when wet |
Distances vary with where your group starts walking and the line your forest guide takes on the day. Treat them as a guide, not a promise.
Section by section
Base camp
The KFDC base camp, often called the Silent Valley base camp, sits in a quiet clearing above the tea estates. Overnight trekkers sleep here in tents. Day trekkers gather here for the briefing before heading up.
Rhodo Valley
The valley takes its name from the wild rhododendrons that grow across its slopes. Pine plantation gives way to open grassland and small streams. This is the last point reachable by vehicle and the natural break point before the climb.
The hills
Past Rhodo Valley, the trail crosses a chain of grassy hills. Many trekkers count them as they go, and each one feels a little steeper than the last. Pockets of shola forest sit in the folds between ridges, and the wind picks up as you climb.
The summit
The top is a broad grassy crest at 2,640 m. On a clear day you can pick out Anamudi, Munnar and Suryanelli, the Kolukkumalai tea estates and the plains of Tamil Nadu far below. Clouds often rise from late morning, so groups aim to summit early and start down before the mist closes in.
How difficult is it?
Meesapulimala is a moderate trek. There is no rock climbing and no technical section, but it is long, with steady ups and downs, full sun on open grass and strong wind near the top. After rain, the grass slopes get slippery on the way down.
- Good fit: active beginners, regular walkers, families with fit teenagers, anyone who has done a day trek before.
- Prepare with: three to four weeks of brisk walks, stairs or a few hill walks with a light backpack.
- Talk to us first if: you have knee, heart or breathing concerns, or have not walked more than a few kilometres in a while.
The other route: Kurangani
A longer trail climbs from Kurangani on the Tamil Nadu side through the Kolukkumalai area. Access on that side is controlled separately by Tamil Nadu authorities and has been restricted at times, so check the current status before planning it. Our treks use the Kerala route through KFDC.
Wildlife and plants
The grasslands are home to the Nilgiri tahr, the mountain goat found only in the Western Ghats. Gaur and elephants also move through the area, which is why camps have trenches and guides decide where groups can walk. Listen for birds in the shola patches.
Meesapulimala is also Neelakurinji country. These shrubs flower together roughly once every twelve years. The last mass bloom around Munnar was in 2018, and the next is expected around 2030.
Trail etiquette
- Stay behind the forest guide and keep the group together.
- Carry every wrapper and bottle back down.
- No speakers or loud music. The quiet is half the experience.
- Keep a long distance from any animal and never feed wildlife.
